CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
The first words out of my mouth after my mother releases me from the biggest hug sheâs ever given me arenât âI missed you,â or âI love you,â or even, âDid you bring my favorite snack because Iâve been on a diet of coconuts and seaweed for two weeks?â No, the first words out of my mouth are, âWhere are they taking him?â as I watch two angel-born haul Thorne across the deck and through a door.
My mom looks confused for a moment, and then glances over her shoulder just as Thorne and his angel-born guards disappear. âDonât worry. Theyâll put him somewhere secure. He wonât be able to hurt you.â
That is not why I asked, but Iâm not ready to explain my convoluted feelings toward Thorne right now. Certainly not before Iâm able to unravel them myself.
My father lays a hand on my shoulder and squeezes lightly, pulling my attention. âAre you unharmed?â he asks, and the look in his eyes says heâs asking about more than just my physical well-being.
âYes, Iâm fine.â
My mom searches my face. âHoney, you can tell us anything. If he did something to you that you donât want to talk about, itâs okay.â
âNo, no. Mom, I really am all right. Thorne didnât do anything to hurt me. Honestly, I probably wouldnât have made it two days on the island if it wasnât for him.â
My parents exchange a concerned glance, one that says they donât quite believe me. I open my mouth to defend Thorne when Cleo shoves between me and my mom, herding me away from my parents. Sheâs been skittish since the moment we boarded the Dauntless, the angel-born warship. I was happy she hadnât attacked anyone yet, but the night was still young.
âMiss Kelly, Iâm so glad to see you are safe and sound,â says a vaguely familiar male voice, and when I look over a man with black hair and gray eyes is walking toward us. Malachi, the cherub Elder.
I donât know Malachi well, but Iâve met him a handful of times. Heâs the oldest of the Elders on the Council, or at least he used to be before Nikias, the angel-line Neph Elder, was initiated a couple months ago. He looks to be in his late forties or early fifties, which is rare among our kind. Iâm not sure how old he is, but itâs possible his age has four digits.
My last face-to-face interaction with Malachi wasnât stellar. It was his idea to bomb London, which is what led to the death of Emberlyâs father. Iâm not sure sheâs forgiven him for that fateful decision yet.
I peek over Malachiâs shoulder and spot Zara and Draven, the dominion and throne Elders. They stop talking and glance my way but stay rooted where they are. Zaraâs light gray stare drills into me, leaving me feeling exposed, like she can read all my secrets on my face. After a pause, they return to their conversation.
My mother clears her throat and I realize itâs my turn to say something.
